2013 is upon us, and most of us already have our sights on goals for the New Year. If you’re anything like me, you have a few goals that are perpetually on your priority list but never quite seem to get accomplished. Sigh.
Why don’t we make these things happen already?
As I sat quietly this morning pondering this question, I determined that my goals are often more of a “wish list” of items that I think I “should” do rather than things that fulfill my heart’s true desire.
That said, I came up with a few rules beyond the usual S.M.A.R.T. process to help me prioritize my goals and facilitate a fantastically successful 2013. I hope these help you!
1. Focus on 1 or 2 goals at a time. When we try to do too much, we end up spinning our wheels. Yes, we have lots of interests to pursue, weaknesses to strengthen and ideas to bring to life, but we don’t have lots of extra time and energy. This year, let’s focus on 1- 2 goals at a time, and invest 100% in making them happen.
2. Make sure the goals are emotionally engaging. Said simply, are you fired up about the goal? Maybe the journey feels tough, but does the destination create the charged-up, positive emotions you seek? If not, pass on the goal. It’s probably not that important to you.
3.) Do something daily in support of the goal. Once you’ve set a goal, commit to do something daily, no matter how small, in support of that goal. This not only keeps the goal top of mind, it puts inertia on your side and transforms the goal into a series of successful habits.
4.) Be prepared for battle. No matter how juiced you are about a goal, it’s naïve to think that the journey will be easy and without obstacles. So, while mapping out the steps to achieve your goals, make sure to devise strategies to address foreseeable challenges. For example, if you are trying to lose weight and struggle to make good choices when you go out to eat, decide that you will pick out exactly what you will eat in advance to avoid temptation.
The New Year is a great time to reflect on where we are and where we want to go. We all have the ability to achieve big, beautiful things—so let’s get to it already. Let’s stop wasting time doing what we think we “should” and focus on the things that will ignite a fire within us and bring light to others. Wishing you your best year yet!
